Lighting is critical to a space's use, one's productivity and their well-being. The Voronoi Lamp is thus not only a design response to such a challenge, but it is also an exploration of digital fabrication + design technology and the role they play in contemporary architecture and design.
Inspired by voronoi patterns found in nature and the curiosity of how its geometry interplay with light and shadow, the use of a laser cutter allowed the digital fabrication of this uniquely shaped lamp to be made possible.
Designed as a living room hanging light fixture, the lamp is meant to create a sense of being lost in a forest at night.
This effect was successfully achieved by contrasting the use of black matte boards (two shells) and a white translucent rice paper (single shell), thereby allowing the lamp to emit a very unique pattern of sharp and soft shadows when lit.
